Saturday, December 25, 1943 - 386th Bomb Group; Great Dunmow, England, Christmas Day:

English and the Continent weather permitted no operations on this day! First Sergeant Lester H. McAlister of the 552nd Squadron, played Santa Claus for 154 English war orphans. Their Christmas party was held in the Group Aero Club. He told the children that he was the Santa Claus from the South Pole - to explain his Texas drawl!

Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer from the 552nd Squadron entertained at a cocktail party for officers. The officers made a gift of beer and wine to every enlisted men’s hut. Turkey with all of the traditional trimmings was served for dinner. 386th Group Commander, Colonel Sanders along with the Squadron Commanders took dinner in the enlisted men’s combat crew mess, which was run by the cooks from the 552nd Squadron. Later in the evening, Group Officers entertained for a dance which was held at the Officer’s Club on Christmas Night.
