MISSION #21    20 DECEMBER 1943    (GROUP MISSION # 56 or 57)

A. TARGET: AGANVILLERS BUZZ-BOMB LAUNCH SITE, NORTH OF ABBEVILLE, FRANCE. Aiming Point: Center of the target.

B. EXPECTED OPPOSITION: Light flak. 40 to 50 fighters.

C. WEIGHT OF OUR ATTACK: 18 a/c from the 386th. Bombing by one box of 18 planes. Bomb Load: 6 - 5001b. G.P. per a/c.

D. MY JOB: Lead Bombardier of the 18 planes. (strike photo)

E. RESULTS: A BULLS-EYE. Up to this time most of the Ninth Bomber Command targets have been airfields and marshalling yards. A few missions have been carried out against BUZZ-BOMB sites. The Allies have been getting pretty nervous about this threat. Launch sites are appearing all around the French coast just across the Channel from London. This is my first shot at this kind of target. The weather is good. A Royal Air Force Mosquito bomber trailed our formation to this target. It took pictures of the results. They must have liked what they saw. Our Group received a Commendation. BUZZ-BOMB targets became a way of life for Ninth Bomber Command after this mission.
