Lt Bill Rose was a navigator/bombardier assigned to the 573rd Bomb Squadron, 391st Bomb Group, in the 9th AF, which was based at RAF Matching, also known as USAAF Station 166. This airfield near the village of Matching Green, Essex, 22 miles northeast of London, opened in 1944 and was used by both the RAF and the 9th AF units. The aircrews supported the Allied invasion on D-Day, and photos taken by Lt Bill Rose as he flew over the landing craft reaching the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944 are included in his profile.
